To the Invest in Youth Community,
For nearly 25 years we’ve been encouraging our students to enthusiastically look for solutions to the challenges around them. As leaders of Invest in Youth we now find ourselves developing new virtual approaches to our one-on-one tutoring that is rewarding for both students and tutors.
Our program committee, along with our executive director Cindy Sackett, began strategizing last spring how we would adjust our program once school resumed this fall. We’re pleased to report we’re back to tutoring, supported by the strong partnerships with our amazing teachers, loyal volunteers and steadfast donors.
We’re connected into each student’s online yet personalized classroom. Teachers, families and tutors share information on how tutoring can be targeted to specific needs. Tutors see what students are working on, the status of assignments and what is due when.
This three-prong approach – teachers, families and tutors collaborating – results in students being met by their tutors where they’re at both academically and emotionally. We can identify individual students’ needs and create a support system to help them remain engaged with their schoolwork and provide additional socialization opportunities.
To support tutors, we work individually with our volunteers so they’re comfortable with the school district’s online classroom. This is particularly important as many families struggle to support their children using this new technology.
Working together, we see increased self-confidence and improved interpersonal skills, crucial to ensuring students’ ongoing academic success. To learn more about how our outreach narrows achievement gaps and brings educational justice to our students, visit InvestinYouth.org/2020 (where you’ll also find a donate link).
As Brie Damitio, a teacher and valued partner at Thurgood Marshall recently noted, “This is the time students need Invest in Youth the most.” Please consider a year-end gift so we can continue developing and implementing new solutions to continue our outreach.
On behalf of our students and the board, thank you for being a part of Invest in Youth.
