Tutor success stories

Our wonderful team of tutor volunteers are always making a difference and impacting youth.   Comments from a former student (1) and a letter from a dedicated school staff person (2) follow:

(1) Below is a transcription of comments made by Syade Shields who participated in the Invest in Youth program for two years and returned in June, 2010 to speak to the students at Thurgood Marshall at the end of their school year. Below are his comments.

Syade Shields, Rainier Scholar

“I go to University Prep and I’m going into high school next year.  So I came to speak to you today about how important it is to take advantage of opportunity you have if you have a helper here. I mean cause for me when I have a helper I do better work than I do with my mom cause we argue a lot and that’s not very good.  So I always want to take advantage of whoever I have and its always great to learn new things with new people cause you never do stop learning.

The Invest in Youth program has benefited me in a lot of ways cause for one it taught me to take advantage of opportunities I had. It has benefited me today, as I live. It also has taught me about how to make connections with people and it’s always great to have those connections. It’s great to have those connections because you will always go back and use them and might see them later on. So that’s always a good thing to have and I have connections with the two tutors I had in this program.  I had Chris and I think I had Scott, also. We were both close friends and we’re in contact to this day so that is also a pretty good thing.

So I would just say to you guys to take advantage of what you have here and listen to what they say cause it will definitely benefit you.”

Dear Invest in Youth,

Thank you very much for giving the students a fabulous, memorable camping experience and a valuable tutoring experience all year through.

The students’ families are also appreciative.  Beacon Hill International School staff have witnessed and documented improvement in the students’ academic learning.

I have enjoyed being part of the Invest in Youth Tutoring Program.  It is the best tutoring program ever!! All the people involved value it immensely!  The students, tutors, staff and families look forward to year 2010-2011 with Invest in Youth.
